Ashod Mooradian was admitted to the practice of law in California in 1998. For nearly 10 years thereafter, Ashod had a solo practice focused on civil litigation, real estate and family law. Then, in 2007, Ashod was recruited by the California State Bar, Office of Chief Trial Counsel, where he quickly rose up through the ranks to Senior Trial Counsel.
Ashod’s assignments at the State Bar involved the most complex cases brought by the Office of Chief Trial Counsel. As the lead State Bar prosecutor in high-profile cases, Ashod served as ethics consultant for the Office of the District Attorney in Los Angeles, Orange and San Bernardino Counties, the State Attorney General’s Office, the United States Attorney’s Office, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Fraud Division of Immigration Customs and Enforcement, the Consumer Fraud Protection Bureau, the Department of Real Estate, among others. One of the more noteworthy cases handled by Ashod Mooradian involved the disbarment of a loan modification attorney who had illegally charged thousands of clients over $30,000,000 in fees. In another disbarment case, an immigration attorney had committed EB-5 visa fraud by charging 100 foreign investors seeking legal residency $500,000 each in fees. This case was joined by the USCIS, the US Attorney’s Office and SEC ultimately leading to federal criminal and civil charges being filed. Due to his extensive trial experience and knowledge of State Bar Court caselaw and the applicable ethics statutes and rules, Ashod was selected to train new hires at the State Bar.
As part of his other duties at the State Bar, Ashod frequently presented to attorney groups and bar associations on the disciplinary system and other legal ethics continuing education courses. Ashod was also a designated subject matter expert in State Bar litigation and procedures for the Office of Chief Trial Counsel and participated in several special committees that re-shaped policy and enforcement procedures for the State Bar of California. Further, Ashod represented the State Bar in several different inter-agency task forces, such as the Los Angeles County Real Estate Fraud Task Force and the Loan Modification Task Force.
In 2017, after nearly 10 years with the Office of Chief Trial Counsel, Ashod returned to private practice and established a boutique practice focused on legal ethics, professional responsibility and compliance, State Bar defense and presenting continuing education trainings and seminars. Ashod provides consultation to attorneys and law firms to assist them in finding answers to difficult questions of legal ethics and compliance or to provide formal ethics opinions. Ashod also defends and represents attorneys who have been charged with committing ethical misconduct by the Office of Chief Trial Counsel. Ashod provides representation for all stages of the disciplinary process, the intake of the complaint, investigation of the complaint, after charges have been filed in State Bar Court against the attorney, litigation regarding charges in the State Bar Court Hearing Department, appeals to the State Bar Court Review Department as well as Petitions for Review to the Supreme Court of California.
Today, Ashod Mooradian is one of the leading experts in ethics in California and is sought after as a presenter by bar associations, agencies and law firms. Ashod’s latest project is the creation of a comprehensive website and reference database, www.statebarhelp.com. This website will be a one-stop location for attorneys to get consultation, access to action guides and training materials as well as on-demand MCLE presentation and much, much more. Look for the launch of www.statebarhelp.com in 2019!
